Procalcitonin (PCT) is a peptide precursor of the hormone calcitonin which is involved with calcium homeostasis.
PCT is a member of the calcitonin (CT) superfamily of peptides. PCT is a peptide of 116 amino acid with an approximate molecular weight of 14.5 kDa.
It has become a marker to improve identification of bacterial infection and guide antibiotic therapy.
